“Some people want it to happen, some wish it to happen, others make it happen.”- Michael Jordan
It is one of the most important things in life when you want to achieve something: motivation. It does not matter if you are motivated to make career, to be a good husband, to get your driving license or to learn a new language. If you want to achieve something in life you need to be motivated. Wouldn’t it be great if you could be your own motivator? Well, good news: you can!
You probably know the feeling when you achieved something what you have been working for. Whether you have been working on it for 1 hour, 1 day, 1 month or 1 year, the feeling of achievement is great. Normally, the more challenges you faced pursuing a goal, the better the feeling once achieved. To conquer these challenges and keep on going you need to have a motivational spirit. When you have the feeling of giving up, your motivation should make you to do not. And that is the reason why motivation is so important, because it can bring you anywhere you want. Life will become better when you are able to motivate yourself.
We all know it is not easy to motivate yourself every single time. Setbacks happen and you are about to lose motivation and hence give up your goal. You start to think about excuses that keep you away from pursuing your initial goal. And after a while you start to believe in these excuses and stop pursuing your goal. Fortunately, by having the right mindset and attitude you are able to overcome these setbacks and keep on going. In the rest of this blog I will provide you with some tips that enable you to keep motivated, no matter how hard the circumstances are. And by that, you can become your own motivator.
1. Keep focused
I wish it was that simple as it sounds. When you start pursuing a certain goal you always face things on your path that might distract you from your goal. It is important to keep focused without being distracted. When you are distracted for too long it might happen that your initial goal fades away or it becomes harder to achieve since you lost track. So keep focus and work towards your goal.
2. Know how to get there
It is simple rule: you need to make a plan to get somewhere. It does not only prevent you from getting lost, it also gives you something where you can stick to and measure your own progress. It is important to track your progress to see how you are doing and where you can improve. A plan makes it easier to track your progress and schedule your next steps.
3. Do not expect that it goes as planned
Of course it will be great if it goes as planned but do not expect this. By not expecting you prevent yourself from getting less motivated when you face setbacks. So know that challenges are coming and be prepared. Face them, conquer and go on. Keep in mind that overcoming a challenge will have a positive impact on your journey towards your goal. It gives you new energy, confidence and a positive mood which makes it easier to keep on going.
4. Know that you need to sacrifice
If you want to achieve something above average, know that you can’t live an average life. If you want to have a successful career, you can’t live a life that ordinary people do. A 9-5 mindset will not help you to build an above-average career. You need to be willing to sacrifice in order to achieve something above average. You need to be outstanding, to distinguish yourself from others and be able to sacrifice things that others won’t.
5. Set rewards
Especially if the journey is long it might be hard to keep motivated all the time. By celebrating small victories during your journey you will stay motivated. This will make it easier to work on a long-term goal, as you get not only rewarded in the end but also in between. Even more important, rewarding yourself can help you to develop a habit. Just like with pets: if you reward them for good behavior it is more likely that they repeat that behavior in the future.
